Estate Litigation Paralegal
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Trust & Estates Paralegal with a strong focus on New York estate litigation to join our team. This role will support attorneys in contested probate, administration proceedings, and related Surrogate’s Court matters. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with NY estate litigation procedures, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to manage complex, deadline-driven caseloads.
This is a fully in-office position, requiring presence five days per week.
Key Responsibilities
Estate Litigation & Case Management
- Assist attorneys in all stages of estate litigation matters, including will contests, fiduciary disputes, accounting proceedings, and kinship hearings
- Maintain and organize case files, exhibits, and litigation materials
- Track key deadlines in accordance with New York Surrogate’s Court procedures and litigation calendars
- Coordinate with clients, fiduciaries, expert witnesses, and opposing counsel
Surrogate’s Court Filings
- Prepare and file petitions, objections, motions, citations, and supporting documents in NY Surrogate’s Courts
- Manage e-filing through NYSCEF and ensure compliance with court-specific rules
- Assist with probate and administration proceedings, including document collection and filing
Discovery & Trial Preparation
- Draft and respond to discovery demands, including document requests, interrogatories, and subpoenas
- Organize and analyze financial records, estate accountings, and supporting documentation
- Prepare deposition outlines, witness materials, and trial exhibits
- Support attorneys during hearings, depositions, and trials
Legal Document Preparation
- Draft pleadings, affidavits, fiduciary accountings, and correspondence
- Assist in preparing settlement agreements and stipulations
- Review and summarize case documents, medical records, and financial data
Client Communication
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, many of whom may be involved in sensitive or contentious disputes
- Conduct client intake and assist with gathering relevant estate and financial documentation
- Provide regular case updates while maintaining strict confidentiality
Administrative & Operational Support
- Manage attorney calendars, court appearances, and filing deadlines
- Coordinate logistics for depositions, mediations, and court hearings
- Assist with billing, time entry, and matter management
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree required; Paralegal certificate strongly preferred
- 3-7+ years of experience in trust & estates, with a strong emphasis on New York estate litigation
- Demonstrated experience working with NY Surrogate’s Court procedures and filings
- Proficiency with NYSCEF e-filing system
- Strong familiarity with estate accountings and fiduciary documentation
- Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office and legal case management systems
